National Testing Agency introduced the percentile score in the year 2019.

Why percentile score was introduced in JEE Main?

It is because the exam is conducted over several slots and dates. The difficulty level of questions may vary in different dates and slots of the exam.

So, NTA uses the normalization process to calculate the percentile score across all the slots and dates. The raw marks of students in a particular date and slot are converted to a percentile score using the normalization formula.

Raw marks means the actual score secured by the student.

How to calculate JEE Main percentile?

The JEE Main percentile is calculation is,

$$P = 100 \times \frac{s}{N}$$

$P:$ Percentile
$s:$ Number of students who secured marks equal to or less than your marks
$N:$ Total number of students who appeared for the exam

Example:

Total number of students let’s say $500$

Student $’X’$ secures $300$ marks

Number of students who secured $300$ marks or less is $400$.

So, the percentile of $’X’$ is, $$P = 100 \times \frac{{400}}{{500}}$$

In other words percentile relates the number of students who secures same or less marks than you with the total number of students.
