7.0 Diagonal Relationship – Similarities with Aluminium:
Beryllium shows some similarities in its properties with aluminium because of the following reasons:
- The polarising power of $Be^2+$ and $Al^3+$ ion is high.
- The standard oxidation potential values of both the elements are very close to each other.
- The electronegativity values of both the elements are the same.
- Like aluminium, $Be$ forms covalent compounds.
- The hydroxide of beryllium, $Be(OH)_2$ and aluminium $Al(OH)_3$ and amphoteric in nature.
- Like aluminium, beryllium is not readily attacked by acids because of presence of an oxide film.
- Both beryllium and aluminium form fluoro complex ions, ${\left[ {Be{F_4}} \right]^{2 - }}$ and ${\left[ {Al{F_6}} \right]^{3 - }}$ in solution.
