    4.0 Emission of electrons

4.0 Emission of electrons
Free electrons move randomly within the conductor, held by positive charges. A minimum energy is required to emit these electrons. This minimum energy required to emit the electron is the property of the metallic surface and is known as work function of the metal.

The energy required to liberate the electron may arise from various sources:

  • Thermionic emission: Heating of metal

  • Field emission: Using a strong electric field

  • Secondary emission: By bombardment of high speed electrons or other particles

  • Photoelectric emission: By incident light
