2.0 Stress
2.0 Stress
When a deforming force is applied on a body, it changes the configuration of the body, as a result, an internal restoring force comes into play, which tends to bring the body back to its original configuration. This internal resisting force acting per unit area is called stress.
$$Stress = \frac{{Restoring\ Force}}{{Area\ of\ Cross-Section}} = \frac{F}{A}$$
The unit of stress is $\frac{N}{{{m^2}}}$.
The effect of stress is to produce distortion or a change in size, volume, and shape (i.e. configuration of the body).
