Definition:

An event is said to have an associated probability $p$ defined as the ratio of number of outcomes favorable to the event with that of the total number of outcomes possible.
$$p = {{Number\;of\;outcomes\;favourable\;to\;the\;event} \over {Total\;number\;of\;outcomes}}$$
where $0 \le p \le 1$.

Explanation:

If there are '$m$' ways in which an event can occur and '$n$' ways in which it can fail, the total number of outcomes being '$m + n$', then probability of occurrence of the event is given as $${m \over {m + n}} = p$$ And the probability of non-occurrence of event is $${n \over {m + n}}$$
