  • Since halogens are more electronegative than carbon, they pull the shared pair of electrons towards themselves, inducing a partial positive charge on carbon and a partial negative charge on the halogen. Thus, the $C-X$ bond in haloalkanes is a polar bond.



  • As the size of the halogen atom increases, the carbon-halogen bond length increases but the enthalpy decreases.
