    1.0 Carbohydrates

1.0 Carbohydrates
An optically active polyhydroxy derivative of aldehyde or ketone or the compounds which produce such units on hydrolysis.

General Formula: ${C_x}{\left( {{H_2}O} \right)_y}$

They contains hydrogen and oxygen in the same proportion as in water and because of that are called Carbohydrates (hydrates of carbon).

All compounds with general formula ${C_x}{\left( {{H_2}O} \right)_y}$ are not necessarily carbohydrates.

For Example: Formaldehyde, Acetic acid etc.
