Coordination Compounds
11.0 Organo-metallic compounds
11.0 Organo-metallic compounds
The compound have one or more metal carbon bonds are called organo-metallic compounds.
Example: $R-Li$, $R-MgX$, ${R_3}Al$
Note: ${C_2}{H_5}ONa$ and $C{H_3}COONa$ does not considered as organo metallic compounds because they have no metal-carbon bond in it.
Organo metallic compounds are divided into two types:
1. Ionic
2. Covalent
Ionic: Metal and carbon atom has ionic reaction.
Example: ${R^ + }L{i^ + },{R^ - }M{g^{ + 2}}{X^ - }$
Covalent compounds are divided into three types:
1. $\sigma $ bonded complexes.
2. $\pi $ bonded complexes.
3. $\sigma $ and $\pi $ bonded complexes.
- $\sigma $ bonded complexes: The $\sigma $ bounded complexes has metal and carbon atom with $\sigma $ bond.
- $\pi $ bonded complexes: The electron of organic compounds interact with metal atom. The number of $\pi $ electrons involved is represented by "${\eta ^x}$".
Example: ${\left[ {PtC{l_3}({\eta ^2} - {C_2}{H_4})} \right]^ - }$ , $\left[ {Fe{{({\eta ^5} - {C_5}{H_5})}_2}} \right]$ , $\left[ {Cr{{({\eta ^6} - {C_6}{H_6})}_2}} \right]$
- $\sigma $ and $\pi $ bonded complexes: The compounds consists of the characteristics of $\sigma $ and $\pi $ bonded complexes.
Example: Metal carbonyl's
