Electrochemistry
    1.0 Introduction

1.0 Introduction
It is defined as the branch of chemistry that examines the phenomena resulting from the combined electrical and chemical effects. It deals with the chemical changes caused in the matter by the passage of electric current and conversion of chemical energy into electrical energy and vice-versa. It is the study of production of electricity from the energy released during spontaneous chemical reactions and to use the produced electricity to bring out the non-spontaneous chemical transformations. It deals with the study of electrical properties of the solutions and electrolytes.

Chemical changes which involves electric current are called electrochemical changes. There are various instruments and devices in which cells and batteries are there which convert chemical energy into electrical energy. In these cells , electrochemical reactions takes place which results into electrochemical changes. These reactions are very efficient and free from pollution. There are many metals and other chemical which are produced by the electrochemical methods. It is not only limited to chemistry but extends to physics and biology. Therefore study of electrochemistry is considered to be important and ecofriendly. It has vast applications.
So we can say that importance of electrochemistry are as follows:

$(i)$ Production of metals like $Mg$, $Cl$, $Na$ etc.
$(ii)$ Electroplating
$(iii)$ Purification of metals
$(iv)$ Batteries and cells used in various devices and instruments.
