1.2 Space Lattice and Unit Cell
A crystal can be considered to be generated from the repetition of some basic unit of pattern such as atoms, molecules or ions.
In other words, a well ordered and regular arrangement of constituents in the three dimensional space is called crystal lattice. A space lattice can be sub-divided into a number of small cells known as unit cells. It can be defined as the smallest block from which entire crystal can be built up by its translational repetition in three dimensions.
