9.4 Absolute error

Absolute error: The magnitude of the difference between the individual measurement and the true value of the quantity is known as the absolute error of the measurement.

It is denoted by $\left| {\Delta a} \right|$.

The errors in the individual measured values from the true value are,
$$\Delta {a_1} = {a_1} - {a_{{\text{mean}}}}$$$$\Delta {a_2} = {a_2} - {a_{{\text{mean}}}}$$$$\Delta {a_3} = {a_3} - {a_{{\text{mean}}}}$$$$..\quad \quad ..\quad \quad ..$$$$..\quad \quad ..\quad \quad ..$$$$\Delta {a_n} = {a_n} - {a_{{\text{mean}}}}$$

Note: $\Delta a$ may be positive in certain cases and negative in some other cases.

Absolute error $\left| {\Delta a} \right|$ will always be positive.
