5.1 Vapour pressure of solids in liquid
As we know vapour pressure is pressure exerted by solution on the lid of container when rate of evaporation becomes equal to rate of condensation.

On addition of non volatile solute in volatile liquid solvent, the vapour pressure of solution is less then the solvent. It is because some molecules of solvent over the surface where evaporation take place are replaced by solute molecules which are non volatile, hence leads to decrease in vapour pressure of solution.

The decrease in vapour pressure depends on quantity of solute by following relation which is Raoul'st law,
$${P_{solvent}} = P_{solvent}^0{x_{solvent}}$$
