6.1 Diamond
It has a crystalline lattice. Each carbon atom is in $sp^3$ hybridised state and is tetrahedrally surrounded by other four carbon atoms at a distance of $154\ pm$.

The tetrehedra are lined together into a three dimensional giant molecule. The unit cell is cubic and held by strong covalent bonds.

It is very difficult to break extended covalent bonding and therefore, diamond is the hardest substance on the earth. In the rare modification of diamond, the tetrahedra are arranged differently to give a zinc blende like structure and a $F.C.C$ unit cell, per unit cell $8$ carbon atoms are present. (DIAGRAM)

It is used as an abrasive for sharpening hard tools, in making dies and in the manufacture of tungsten filaments for electric light bulbs.
