12.3 Autocatalysis
During a chemical reaction, if one of the products formed acts as a catalyst, the phenomenon is called autocatalysis.

Question 6. Explain the auto catalysis reaction in titration of oxalic acid with $KMn{O_4}$.

Solution: In the titration of oxalic acid solution with $KMn{O_4}$ solution in presence of dilute ${H_2}S{O_4}$, the colour of $KMn{O_4}$ first fades slowly and then faster due to the formation of $M{n^{2 + }}$ ions which act as autocatalyst.
\[\begin{array}{c}{2KMn{O_4}}& + &{3{H_2}S{O_4}} \end{array}\begin{array}{c}+ &{5{H_2}{C_2}{O_4}}& \to \end{array}\begin{array}{c}{{K_2}S{O_4}}& + &{2MnS{O_4}} \end{array}\begin{array}{c}+ &{8{H_2}O} \end{array}\begin{array}{c}+ &{10C{O_2}} \end{array}\]
