1.2 Vector quantities

The type of physical quantities which as both magnitude and direction are called vector quantities.

Example:

Displacement $=5\ m$ towards east. ($5$ is magnitude, $m$ is unit and 'towards east' is direction)"

Velocity $=6\ m/s$ along path $AB$. ($6$ is magnitude, $m/s$ is unit and 'along path $AB$' is direction)

Force $=10\ N$ towards north. ($10$ is magnitude, $N$ is unit and 'towards north' is direction)

Mathematically a vector is represented as,

Vector $=$ (Magnitude) (Direction)

or $$\overrightarrow A = \left| {\overrightarrow A } \right|\widehat A$$

where,


$\overrightarrow A :$ Vector $A$

$\left| {\overrightarrow A } \right|:$ Magnitude of vector ${\overrightarrow A }$

$\widehat A :$ Unit vector or direction of vector ${\overrightarrow A }$
