9.2 Solar cell

Solar cell converts solar energy into electrical energy.

Note:

  • A solar cell is basically a $p-n$ junction which generated electromotive force $(EMF)$ when solar radiation falls on the $p-n$ junction.
  • Solar cell converts light energy into DC energy and thus acts as a source of DC power.
  • Solar cell works on the same principle (photo voltaic effect) as the photo diode.
  • In solar cell no external bias is applied.
  • The junction area is kept large so that large amount of solar radiation is incident on the junction.
